Murray Art Guild

We stopped by MAG yesterday afternoon and met with Debi Henry Danielson, Executive Director. We had been looking forward to stopping by for awhile now.

They have a great community space for artists, with studio, photography room to capture images of art, weaving looms and knitting spaces, an outdoor area where cob building is going on, and a nice little gallery room. They are also tucking deeper into their space with a pottery studio, including kilns. Workshops and classes for all ages are taught. If you are in Murray, or passing through, or nearby, you need to stop by and enjoy the warm, friendly, and creative atmosphere.

Last Day!

We left Minot on August 17th. These are pictures of my last day at the Shop, and the last view of Base.

We are almost settled into our new home in Murray, KY. My studio is about the only thing completely unpacked as I am already at work on new pieces as well as completing the required projects for my 3 Dimensional Design and Life Drawing classes.....

Transition from military life to civilian University life is a bit harder than I expected but it is a very welcome and much anticipated change.

Commissions

SF49 is a commissioned piece, completed and delivered just before we left Minot, for a San Francisco 49'rs fan. Prints are available.

Matched Pair

Matched Pair is hanging at the Ice House in Mayfield, Kentucky as part of the Arts In the Community XVII through the month of August. After that it heads to its new home.

If you are in Kentucky, or nearby, you need to travel to Mayfield and check out this gem of a gallery and artist community. It is very friendly and open and they have a great space.

May 2009 Solo Gallery Exhibit!

I am excited to announce I have just been booked for a solo exhibit at The Ice House Gallery in Mayfield, Kentucky I will post exact dates as soon as I have them. I will also have an artists page there as soon as they are finished updating the brand new website.

En Route Exhibit at Minot AFB

The reception went well. I can't believe it is already almost May 4 and time to take them down...... Star and I really enjoyed meeting everyone who came out, and the Library staff are all very nice. It was very satisfying to see Air Force art on Base.

Northern Sentry Interview

I realized I had not yet posted the article in the Northern Sentry about my participation in Youth Arts Month so I am doing so now. I enjoyed meeting everyone and answering questions, and hearing the "oohs" and "ahhhs" during the demos! I was impressed by the level of art understanding and questions they had. Margaret Lee is an amazing education coordinator and she made me feel very much at home. This program should be duplicated everywhere!

Art Under Construction

Western Machine
is displayed with pottery by Jim Bailey. And below is the Art Under Construction press release. You can click on it to view a larger, readable image. In this show Western Machine (part of my 2008 body of work in progress of gouache on illustration board, cut and pasted) and Dying Trying II (from my Alaskan Series, a gouache and oil pastel) make their debut. Also hanging in the Lower Gallery is LifeSpin and Gettin' The Job Done, both were part of the EnRoute Exhibit but were carried over into this one so as to be part of my demos for Youth Arts Month.

En Route Exhibit Up at the Minot AFB Library!

What follows is the press release. I am very happy to have this exhibit hanging on base so that the people who live the life that inspired the art can view it. --Jason

Youth Arts Month Demo

Jason demo's his printmaking method to grades K-1 on Monday 03 March, 2008, at the Taube Museum of Art in Minot, ND. March is Youth Arts Month and the Taube is celebrating children with their "Art Under Construction Exhibit" which features art in all mediums that is both complete and incomplete. The artists then have the chance to demo their art to over 50 classes of Minot Public School children throughout the month, afterwards the kids enjoy an art project lead by the Education Coordinator, Margaret Lee ( who was the facilitator on this day who you see and hear on the video), or the Executive Director, Nancy Brown. The area artists include Jim Bailey, Karen Davidson, Andrea Donovan, Bill Harbort, Linda Olson, Doug Pfliger, Walter Piehl, Patrick Sheldon, Tom Willis, and Jason Hargrove

The First In a New Body of Work!

Unveiling for the first time! The Western Machine A sneak peek into the next collection in the medium of gouache painted on paper then cut and pasted on illustration board. So, why this piece? Even though we have come this far in horse training alot of the rough ways of doing things still exist, despite John Lyons, Pat Parelli, Monty Roberts and the like who present old, wise ways in an easy to understand package. There are gentle ways of horsemanship, yet many people are doing the same things. Like this scene. The rider is about to fall off, he's spurring the sides with a whip in his hand, the horse is out of balance and just ran through a fence... why?

Installation Piece at Taube Museum of Art

A video Star took of me finishing it up. It isn't permanent, it is only to last until the end of the Exhibit..... Star tells me that Terry Aman, the features editor from the Minot Daily News noted upon viewing it, that the transient nature of the installation piece and the title of the Exhibit- En Route were very fitting. I took that as a great compliment Terry, thank you!

Minot ND ........

Spent all weekend completing a packet of interest for the Nashville International Airport's call for public art. I am drooling over a chance to create something for that gigantic space over the ticket lobby! I have spent so many years dreaming of returning home that my head and my sketchbook are filled with images and ideas for just such a project....

Just finished the packet when I got the call that the weather was to bad for me to go from town into base! Woohooo!

MSU's Poetry, Art, Music, & Song Night at Taube Museum of Art

photo of Lisa McCool-Grime

We had a great time. What stands out the most is how cool it was that these talented performers were standing in front of Jason's work. We loved Duane Halvorson's accordion performance of Mediterranean music, lively and refreshing on a chilly evening. The poetry written by Lisa McCool-Grime was very entertaining, she is a great performer with colorful and spell binding imagery. We enjoyed all the performers and we met some very nice people who were interested in Jason's work. Wish we could have stayed longer but I forgot my insulin again! If you are ever in Minot for one of these events you must come out! I hear there might be one coming again soon! --Star Hargrove

"Prints On The Wall!" News Release

“PRINTS ON THE WALL!”

Printmakers Jason Hargrove and Eric A. Johnson Visit the Taube Museum

(Minot, ND) The Taube Museum of Art at 2 N. Main St. will be exhibiting “En Route” by new Minot resident with the USAF, Jason Hargrove and “Polka Dots and Crooked Trees” by Fargo area native, Eric A. Johnson. The prints in this exhibit include two different styles and both exhibit a very strong creative and artistic style.

Hargrove created a process of printmaking using vinyl sign equipment; which combines art and machine. He has a degree in desktop publishing and previously owned a vinyl sign business before the Air Force. He uses the vinyl sign equipment to experience new levels within his art, to perhaps add more detail or speed up the process to enhance his main flow of work. His work has different themes, Air Force, Alaska, social and cultural issues and styles, from realistic to abstract.

Johnson is a printmaker currently devoting his creative energy to the linocut process. He uses the reductive method, carving a layered tapestry of interwoven lines that manifest as expressive trees glowing and vibrating in their brilliantly hued fantasy landscapes. He graduated with an MFA from the University of North Dakota and has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally. He currently keeps a studio in Fargo and works as an intern at the Printmaking Education and Research Studio (P.E.A.R.S.) assisting Master Printmaker Kent Kapplinger.

This exhibit will be displayed, intermixed, in the full gallery from December 29 – February 23, 2008. There will be an Artist Reception held on Thursday, January 10th from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. with the artists in attendance.

For more information on either artist, please visit www.eajarts.com and www.jason-hargrove.com.

There is no charge for admission, but contributions will be accepted to help the Taube Museum fulfill their mission of enriching lives through the arts. Refreshments will be served.

Please call Nancy F. Brown, Executive Director at the Taube Museum of Art at 838-4445 for further information.

Images available upon request.
